Embracing big brother: How facial recognition could help fight crime

  • Information is stored in a database through facial recognition, which is a computer based system that immediately identifies a person based on a digital image and/or the person's video source.
  • This is a tool was used in TV shows such as CSI, and now is gonna be use in reality.
  • Facial recognition is a key part of the agency's NGI System, a system that includes iris scans, DNA analysis, and voice identification.
  • Their goal is to reduce terrorist and criminal activity by improving the biometric identification and criminal history information services.
  • Dr. Chris Solomon in the UK created an "electronic sketch artist" system that is used in more than 30 countries.
  • This technology is soon to be release across the U.S. in 2014
  • There is many new functions this face scanning can provide, for example, in paying for goods, you face only has to be scan
  • The government is planing on using this scaning face system to fight crime.

Do now 12/3/13

I don't really like using twitter, so I wouldn't really want to use it for school. I find twitter to be confusing sometimes because I don't use it every day. I rarely go on it, maybe like once a month. I wouldn't like using it for school.

Do Now 11/11

I don't really have a lot to say about what happened because I don't know what happened. I don't watch the news or anythng like that. All I know is that there was a really bad typhoon. I haven't seen any pictures on it but I could imagine that it was really bad. I don't think we can do anything to stop these things from happening but we can help the country get back on its feet.

  • How was this wiki created?- This was created using wiki spaces.
  • What would you add to it?- I would add pictures and videos to make it more interesting.
  • What did you learn from it?- We learned about disruptive technology in the classroom.
  • If you had to create a Wiki with a team, what would be the specific topic (s)?- Sports, music, and food.
  • How can wikis be used in classrooms?- We can use them for do nows and for collaborting on group projects.

Tech Article 11/1

     Mind-Reading Technology Speeds Ahead

  • By scanning blogs of brain activity, scientists may be able to decode people's thoughts, dreams and intentions.
  • Although companies are starting to pursue brain decoding for a few applications, such as market research and lie detection, scientists are far more interested in seeing if these techniques can tell them about the basic principles governing brain organization and how it encodes memories, behavior and emotion.

  • The computer program uses the details of a scan to guess what the participant has watched in the past.
  • Brain decoding took off about a decade ago, when neuroscientists realized that there was a lot of untapped information in the brain scans they were producing using functional magnetic resonance imaging (fMRI).
  • That technique measures brain activity by identifying areas that are being fed oxygenated blood, which light up as colored blobs in the scans.
  • To analyze activity patterns, the brain is segmented into little boxes called voxels — the three-dimensional equivalent of pixels — and researchers typically look to see which voxels respond most strongly to a stimulus, such as seeing a face.
  • By discarding data from the voxels that respond weakly, they conclude which areas are processing faces.
  • Jack Gallant from the University of California trained the program by showing it patterns of brain activity elicited by a range of images and film clips.
  • People around the world use techniques like these to try to decode brain scans and decipher what people are seeing, hearing and feeling, as well as what they remember or even dream about.
  • Reports say that these techniques have brought mind reading from the realms of fantasy to fact.
  • Companies are starting to pursue brain decoding for market research and lie detection.
  • Scientists are using this process to learn about the brain itself.

Wiki Research

I think it would be a good idea to use wiki in some classes. We could use it as a glossary for terms we learned in class, like for English we could use it for our vocabulary. We can also use it to create study guides for tests for all our classes. Wikis are useful for collaborating. For this class you can post the do nows on there and we can respond to them. I don't really have much experience with wikis. I only used a wiki once for a science project, which we had to use a wiki for.

Do Now 10/28

If I were to be invisible for a day, I would do many good deeds. I would help people who are in danger. For example, if someone accidentally fell off a buildings I would save them from dying. If there was someone about to get shot by a bullet I would push them out of the way.
Also, another good deed I would do is help people who are ill. I would try to help them get better by finding a cure for whatever they have. I would try to find a cure for all types of cancer and illnesses. These are just a few of the many things I would do.

Do Now 10/7/13

If I were to add a class to the school curriculum it would be a music class, but not like the one we already have. This class would be for people who want to learn how to play an instrument, any intrument they want. They would have to sign up for this class because you shouldn't be forced to play an instrument, although i think it is good to learn one. According to researchers children and adults who learn instruments can increase their IQ.

In this class the teacher would take the student and teach him/her the instrument they want to play. This would be a great class for students who want to learn an instrument because lessons are expensive. I take lessons one day a week and it is $25 for a half hour. Thats about $1,300 a year for lessons! Although the music teacher we already have in school teaches the instrument you want to learn, you're learning it with a group of people who are learning the same instrument. This isn't fair for some of the students because they may be slower at learning the instrument than the others, or maybe they are going to slow for the student and they want to go further. I think this would be a great program for people who have an interest in playing a musical instrument.

multi-media post

I have Ms. Garvin seventh period for US History 2. She went to Purdue University and she's a runner. This year I'm expecting to learn about the cold war. Her grading policy is 40% for test/quizzes, 40% for project-based assignments, 10% for homework, and 10% for participation. Ms. Garvin uses online voice threads for homework and notes, which I like better than in class note taking.
In her class we've done a lot of gallery walks. That's when you walk around looking at the room, look at the pictures, and fill in the sheet she gives you. I like doing the gallery walks because they're fun and I learn a lot more from them.
I like that class so far. It's not as hard as I thought it would be and the work is pretty easy. I like the fact that we have online homework and note taking because it's easier. Ms. Garvin isn't a boring teacher and she makes her class fun.

Technology Article: 9/13/2013

Most people feel anxious when their smartphone is out of arm's reach. But what if it was actually on your arm, woven into the very fabric of your sweater? Sportswear designers Under Armour are already on the case. They recently unveiled their touchscreen t-shirt concept, Armour39, which measures your athletic performance.

It's just one recent example of how design, technology and science are coming together to form a new generation of consumer products that look set to shape the future.

  • This week, sportswear designers of the company Under Armour revealed a touchscreen t-shirt call Armour39.
  • Its purpose is to track basic performance measurements like speed, intensity, heart rate, calories burned, a log of past performances and other athletic metrics.
  • It can also measure how hard an athlete pushes him or herself during a workout on a scale of 1-10.
  • To determine the answer, Amour39 takes into account heart rate, calories burned and past performances, among other things.
  • All the information is capture by use a chest strap that contains an Under Armour “bug” and heart monitor.
  • The bug can then be used in conjunction with the Armour39 watch, or with the use of an iOS app for iPhone’s to provide easy access to the data.
  • The Armour39 doesn't possess a GPS feature for good run tracking, which seems like a chief invention error that affects runners, who are a humungous segment of their market.
  • This gadget does run for approximately a year on the watch battery used in the gadget.
  • The Armour39 introduces its first product that seems to propose a greater shift toward wearable technology.
  • The product costs $149.99.
  • If you prefer not to download the app, there's a watch that's available for $200 that syncs with the device and provides readings.

What 9/11 means to me

I don't remember 9/11 at all so it doesn't really mean anything to me. Even though I don't remember it I do think it was a tragic event.

Hi!

I am Gloria Glavan. I play soccer and I do tae kwon do. I'm into music. I play bass guitar, acoustic guitar, piano, and a little bit of drums. I like to make songs and I record them with my brother usually.
